Photo Highlights + Ideas Galore: Cape Visioning Workshop and Spaghetti Day

We hope everyone had a great Cape Thanksgiving! Thanks to everyone who came out and shared ideas with us earlier this month at the Community Visioning Workshop and our Spaghetti Day Idea Booth! Both events were fun and interactive ways for us to gather your big ideas for Cape Vision 2040: A New Comprehensive Plan for Cape Girardeau. Below is an overview of each event with photo highlights.

Cape Community Visioning Workshop

On Tuesday, November 7, approximately 30 residents participated in the Community Visioning Workshop in the Central Middle School cafeteria. Folks first provided some ‘big ideas’ and filled out a short survey. Mike Hoffman (Teska Associates, Inc.) then provided a short presentation summarizing the purpose of the Comprehensive Plan, overall timeline, and a summary of some of the research completed so far (click here to see the presentation).  Folks then visited each of the four topic stations to share their ideas on Economic Development, Environmental Stewardship, Health + Social Vibrancy, and Transportation and Mobility. After visiting each station, folks were given stickers to vote on ideas they liked or disagreed with.

Overview of Ideas Shared

The ‘big ideas’ that received the most votes were:

  • Inexpensive, quality child care
  • Youth centers
  • 100% solar/wind energy
  • A science and tech center

The top ideas from the topic stations were:

Economic Development

  • More diversified tax base! Can’t rely so heavily on sales tax.  Use tax?  Property tax?
  • Something for all children in the community and community center – YMCA
  • Training program for trades

Environmental Stewardship

  • Fix-up abandoned houses
  • Community garden with learning connected
  • Green energy – use highways!

Health + Social Vibrancy

  • More emphasis on neighborhood parks – less emphasis on organized sports and facilities
  • Medical clinics located in the center of the south side of town
  • Parks for all ages

Transportation and Mobility

  • Free shuttle bus for Head Start kids
  • More free parking for SEMO students!!!
  • Rides to S.E. Missouri manufacturers

Spaghetti Day Idea Booth

Cape Girardeau’s 11th annual Spaghetti Day was a fun (and delicious) event put on by the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Foundation at historic A.C. Brase Arena on Thursday, November 9. A record 3,022 meals were served throughout the day! Mike Hoffman and Taylor LaFave (Teska Associates, Inc.) were on hand to collect “Delicious Homemade Ideas” from residents for Cape Vision 2040. As folks waited in line for food, or on their way out, they were encouraged to visit posters and jot down their ideas for Cape’s future; they also voted on ideas that resonated with them by placing a sticker next to it.

In total, spaghetti-goers shared 37 unique ideas, with 115 votes of support. All ideas were focused on ways to make Cape an even better place to live, work, shop, play, and visit. The crowd offered a great cross section of residents from all demographic segments. Top ideas include:

  • Drive-in theater (16 votes)
  • Ice skating rink (16 votes)
  • New indoor aquatic center (13 votes)
  • Rooftop bar and restaurant (11 votes)
  • Trader Joe’s (9 votes)
  • South Cape neighborhood park (8 votes)
  • Redevelopment of West Park Mall (7 votes)
  • More activities for kids (6 votes)
